Shiner Prickly Pear Lager

Shiner Prickly Pear Lager from Spoetzl Brewery out of Shiner, Texas. This beer was certainly different from most beers we have reviewed and enjoyed on our own time. When poured it had a clear, light amber hue with a smaller off white head. It was very, very aromatic with a 50/50 tart and fruity smell. It really had a great fragrance. The first sip was a bit of a shock; it was just how it smelled, very tart and sweet. As your palette gets used to the tartness it gets better. It did not taste malty and it wasn’t overly carbonated. The after taste is really where you can taste the prickly pear. It is a very light beer that goes down easy. It might not be everyone’s favorites, but I do recommend giving it a try at least once, it’s certainly a different kind of beer. Rated 3.7 out of 9 –A.

Shiner Prickly Pear from Spoetzl Brewery Shiner Texas. This lager is a limited edition brew. It has a strong citrus smell. When poured it has a light amber color to it and small to medium head. It head kind of a earthy wheat taste to it and a tart pear taste at the end , Due to the prickly pear. It wasn’t very strong tasting and had very little malt taste to it. It is very easy to drink due to its light beer taste. I think this is an average lager rated 3.5 out of 5-D

Sorry guys, it’s been a little dead on our page! Been busy with finals!

Cooper’s Old Time Pit BBQ Fort Worth, Texas

Cooper’s Old Time Pit BBQ located in the Fort Worth Stockyards.
After reading good and bad reviews D and I thought we would give it a try at least once. We will definitely go back. As seen in the picture we had gotten beef ribs, moist brisket, corn, potato salad, and beans. The Beef ribs were some of the best ribs that had ever graced my taste buds. Moist and tender. Came off the bone real easy. The rub they used went really well with the taste of the beef. Wouldn’t recommend eating the beef ribs with their sauce, didn’t mesh well together. The moist brisket just melted in your mouth. Tender, very moist, flavorful. Great rub. Nice smoke ring. Not the best brisket I’ve ever had, but it was pretty good, would get it again. The corn was good, basic half an ear of corn, can’t complain. Just a little expensive though. $1 for half and ear. The potato salad was nothing to write home about, I’ve made better potato salad at home. What I did like about the potato salad is that the mustard taste wasn’t overpowering the salad itself but you could taste hints of it. The pinto beans were average, tasted better when we added their BBQ sauce in it.
I would recommend if any of ya’ll happen to check out Cooper’s, when you order your meat, I would recommend that you not have it dipped in their sauce. Instead get it on the side. Their sauce was very runny and very vinegary. It’s not a bad sauce, but I just don’t see it going well with all their different types of meat. Use sparingly I would say. But hey, ya’ll might love it!
Including food, service and atmosphere I rate Cooper’s 4.5 out of 5. (5 out of 5 for the beef ribs alone!) -A

What I liked about Coopers was the great smell from the pit as soon as you walk in the door. The brisket was nice and had a good smoke ring. Its moist, very tender and tasted good. Not too smokey. The beef ribs were excellent. Great rub taste. Lots of meat and very tender. The meat tasted good enough not to need bbq sauce, which I didnt really care for. I prefer a thicker sauce. this was runny and vinegar based. So I didnt really try too much of the sauce. The beans were free and tasted ok. The potato salad was above average. All in all a good bbq joint. Id rate the beef ribs 4.8 out of 5, and the beef brisket a 4.25 out of 5. The total rating 4.5 outta 5. We recommend y’all give it a try.-D

Dublin Bottling Works Orange Cream Soda

Dublin Orange Cream Soda from Dublin Bottling Works. This soda has got to be the best orange cream soda I have ever tasted! It was super rich in flavor and a perfect balance of orange and cream. It had a nice amount of carbonation that tingled throughout my mouth while the flavor took over. The bottle also has a cute retro feel to it and it was a bright orange color with a wonderful tart aroma. And of course it is made with pure can sugar so it has a certain fresh, crisp taste to it because of it. Dublin hardly disappoints! I give this orange cream soda a 5 outta 5. -A

Deep Fried King Ranch Casserole

image

Deep Fried King Ranch Casserole at the Texas State Fair in Dallas, Texas. A delicious, quirky take on the casserole that reigns supreme in the great state of Texas, the King Ranch Casserole! It’s even shaped like our great state! On the inside there is a creamy mix of cheese, chicken, and tortillas that had an abundance of spices. Rolled in a southwestern styles egg wash and panko and deep fried to a golden perfection. The outside has a good crisp while the inside kept creamy. It was delicious and a very interesting take on the casserole we all know and love! Served with multicolored tortilla chips and a side of queso. My only complaint is that I wish the queso was of a better quality. Give it a try if you are heading down to the fair and tell us what y’all think! Rated 4.69 out of 5 –A and D

Pecan Lodge, Dallas, Texas

Pecan Lodge at the Dallas Farmers Market Shed #2 in Dallas, Texas. We had gotten up early to enjoy the fall temps and head down to the Dallas Famers Market. We had arrived and gotten in line early, around 9:50-55ish (we knew that Pecan Lodge was a very popular BBQ spot) so we were prepared to wait! We had previously tried their chopped beef brisket sandwich at the Untapped Festival in Fort Worth a few months ago and loved it! When they opened up at 11am, we arrived at the counter hoping they didn’t run out of our favorite, beef brisket and beef ribs. Unfortunately, they had just ran out of beef brisket, beef ribs, and pulled pork just two orders before us( oh no!!!!!!) But since we waited in line all that time, we decided to give their sausage and pork ribs a try. Their sausage was very juicy and flavorful once you get past the heavy smoke flavor. I love smoked meats, but the sausage had just a little too much smoke, but it is something I would get again. The pork ribs were awesome! Very, very juicy and flavorful with a lot of meat on the bone and the spice rub was perfect, it didn’t need a drop of sauce! We had also gotten the fried okra, which was fried perfectly, and wasn’t slimy. Good amount of breading to okra ratio. By far my favorite place to have okra. We had also gotten the southwestern beans, which reminded me of black bean soup, because of the choice of seasons put in. It was delicious! Can’t wait to head back out there and camp our around 9am to get our hands on their brisket and beef ribs! Sausage rated 4.1 out of 5, pork ribs rated 4.95 out of 5, fried okra rated 5 out of 5, and the southwestern beans rated 4.7 out of 5. -A

Pecan Lodge Dallas, Texas. We arrived at 9:55am and there was a line of about 40 people ahead of us. They don’t open till 11am. At noon, we got up to the counter to order. The beef ribs, brisket, and pulled pork was sold out. We knew this may happen so we thought getting there when we did would be a good time to still get to try their great brisket. We ended up getting the 2 meat combo with 2 sides. The combo we chose was pork ribs and smoked sausage. The two sides were fried okra and south western pinto beans. Even though we were disappointed that we didn’t get any brisket the meal we had was good. The pork ribs had a nice smoke ring and taste. The ribs were tender and juicy. The smoked sausage was good too, but had too much smoke flavor. The first bite I could only taste the smoke. The sausage had a nice casing and good quality meat. Now to the sides. The fried okra was good and wasn’t fried too much and tasted good. The southwestern beans were good also. They had a different flavor than your usual pinto beans they had a lot of spices and almost a black bean soup kinda taste. Guess next time we try Pecan lodge again we will have to get there sooner. Ribs rated 4.8 out of 5. Sausage rated 4.0 out of 5. Fried okra rated 4.8 out of 5. Southwestern pinto beans rated 4.75 out of 5-D

Rahr & Sons Brewery Iron Thistle Scotch Ale

image

Iron Thistle Scotch Ale from Rahr & Sons Brewery, Fort Worth, TX. This beer when poured has a dark amber color, creamy head and has a sweet and malty aroma. The beer is malty and had a strong taste with a touch of bitterness. I also noticed hints of caramel and chocolate maybe? It looks like it would be a heavy beer, but I was surprised that it was somewhere around the middle. I’m a fan of this beer and I really wish it was offered year round! This is by far one of my favorites from Rahr & Sons Brewery 4.75 outta 5 -A

Rahr & Sons Brewery out of Fort Worth Texas. Iron Thistle Scotch Ale. This Scottish Ale has a higher alcohol by volume than most beer. It is 8.0%. The reason is it takes more time to brew. This beer has a low, hoppy bitterness and smooth sweet malty taste to it. One of the better Scottish Ales I have tasted. It has a dark brown color and a low to medium head when poured. The only thing I can find wrong with Iron Thistle Scottish Ale is that it’s a seasonal beer. It is only available January-February. It can be found through out Texas. Rated 4.8 out of 5-D

Deep Eddy Vodka

Deep Eddy Vodka out of Austin, Texas! This handcrafted vodka is distilled ten times in small batches and filtered with charcoal four times which ensures it’s a smooth, clean vodka. This vodka was light and crisp to the taste and went down well surprisingly. It also tasted great in cranberry juice and with BigTex orange juice for that early in the day drinking. I was really impressed with how well it stood with the juices and held its own flavor (or could it be I put too much in my drink!?) Either way it had a wonderful taste and I now considered this a staple now for vodka and recommend it for everyone who is a fan of a slightly sweet, crisp, overall delicious vodka made in the great state of Texas! Rated 5 outta 5. –A

Deep Eddy Vodka had a nice clean taste to it. What I liked was it didn’t have a chemical taste to it. Like A mentioned it was filtered with charcoal. It was smooth tasting and didn’t have an over powering burn at the end. It has a mild sweet tone to it. This vodka many say is a rival to Tito’s vodka. It tasted good on its own and in mixed drinks. I also liked the bottle design. It has the Deep Eddy logo pin up girl imprinted in the glass bottle. All in all a great tasting vodka using the purest Texas water and distilled in a temperature controlled environment. They use local natural Texas ingredients. Rated 4.9 out of 5-D
